there is a news service stamp on the back.      Crowninshield fought in the Civil War

General William Henry French.(1815-1881). 
Albumen Print.     2  x 3 1/4   inches on a larger mount.  French graduated from West Point in 1837.  He had artillery duty and served in the Seminole War and the Mexican War.   He refused to surrender his garrison in Texas  after the Civil War broke out.  He served in the Penninsula Campaign, Antietam. Fredericksburg  Chancellorsville, Harper's Ferry, and Mine Run.

Charles Griswold Gurley Merrill (1836-1909) . Autographed Albumen Print 1861.  4 1/2 x 3 1/2 oval albumen print on an 8 1/2 x 11 inch page which comes from a Yale Album 1861.  The page is autographed by Merrill below the image.   Merrill was a medical doctor.  He was an acting assistant surgeon United States Army at Nashville Tenn.  He was advanced to the full rank of assistant in 1863.  In December , 1863 Merrill was appointed surgeon of the Twenty-second Regiment, U.S. Colored Troops which was assigned to Eighteenth Corps Army of the Potomac.  He was involved in the siege of Petersburg, VA and the capture of Richmond.  His Reigment took part in the funeral of President Lincoln and the hunt for John Wilkes Booth.  After the war, Merrill was connected with the U.S. Internal Revenue Service.

Field Marshal Edmund Allenby (1861-1936).  4    x 5  3/4 inch    silver print  with 
some surface marks on a slightly larger mount.  
The photographer is Russell & sons.  Their blindstamp is on the mount.   
Allenby led the Egyptian Expeditionary Force in the conquest of Palestine & Syria, 1917-1918

Captain Honorable Lancelot Lowther(1867-1953).   
Lowther was the brother and heir to Lord Lonsdale sporting peer.  He served in the Middle East during WW I and received an OBE and the Order Of The Nile.  4 1/2 x 6  1/2 inch   silver print
with some stains.  
Lowther is identified on the back of the picture . 
 The photograph is by Speaight, London.  
His blind stamp is on the lower left of the photograph

Sir Stanley Brenton Von Donop (1860-1941).  
 8 x 10 inch    silver print  with 
missing upper right corner of the border.  
Von Donop was a Brig. General in the British Army and Master General of Ordnance.  
He was also a very good cricket player.  
He is identified in pencil on the back.
