Capitalist and Diplomat. Pioneer in lead and lead products business. Helped develop lead mines in Missouri and make St. Louis a Commercial center. Helped form Republican party in state. Elected to Congress 1862 and 1864. Served on the Joint Committee on Reconstruction. Minister to Brazil 1869-1871.
